Glazing Specifier & Calculators
Describe the opening and get back what it must be built to: whether safety glass is compulsory, which class and thickness that demands, what the panel weighs, the deflection the frame has to hold, and the thermal target for the province it sits in.
Describe the opening
Every field that changes the specification is here.
Below 800 mm the low-level glazing rule applies and safety glass becomes compulsory.
Leave blank if the pane is not beside a door. Within 300 mm the door rule applies.
Safety glazing is compulsory
Class A (400 J drop-bag impact). 2 rules apply to this opening.
Required glazing
SANS 10400-N · SANS 1263-1- Glass
- Toughened or laminated safety glass
- Minimum thickness
- 6mm
- Class
- Class A (400 J drop-bag impact)
- · 6 mm minimum for door or glazed door panel
Rules triggered
2 applicable- Low-level glazing ruleSANS 10400-NAny pane installed lower than 800 mm from the finished floor level must be Class A safety glass. You entered 0 mm.
- Door or glazed door panelSANS 10400-NGlazing in a door or within 300 mm of a door frame opening
Dead weight
2.5 kg/m² per mm- Area
- 2.880 m²
- Calculation
- 2.400 × 1.200 × 6 × 2.5
Size the hinges, tracks, clamps and fixings against this figure, not against the drawing.
Deflection limits
AAAMSA- Longest span
- 2400 mm
- Framed, under wind load
- 13.7 mm (L/175)
- Exposed glass edge
- 36.9 mm (L/65)
Glass only performs as tested if the frame holds it inside these limits. Beyond them the edge stresses rise and the water-penetration rating is lost.
Energy and thermal
SANS 10400-XA · SANS 204Keep the winter solar gain while controlling summer overheating: Low-E glazing or a double glazed unit with the SHGC tuned to admit winter sun.
- Recommended assembly
- Thermally broken aluminium with Low-E glazing or a DGU
- Air infiltration
- A2
The usual class for residential external openings (AAAMSA A2).
SANS 10400-N for safety glazing and deflection, SANS 1263-1 for impact class, SANS 10400-XA and SANS 204 for thermal performance, SANS 10160 for guard line loads.
Width × height × thickness × 2.5 kg. That figure decides the hinges, the track, the clamps and often the lifting plan on the day.
A substitute for the competent person appointed on the project. A site wind category, an unusual span or a change of occupancy can all move the answer.
Documentation that closes a project out
Fabricated at our Meadowdale facility in Johannesburg and installed nationwide. Every scope that requires sign-off leaves here with the paperwork that proves what was built.
Glazing Certificate of Conformance
Signed by a SAGGA-registered competent person, naming the glass type, thickness, class and location of every pane we supplied.
AAAMSA performance submission
Wind-load, deflection and water-penetration certification for the aluminium system as installed, with the test classification quoted.
Form 4 submission support
Documentation pack prepared for the local authority on request, so sign-off is not held up by missing glazing evidence.
Fabrication drawings and cut sheets
Dimensioned drawings, glass schedules and profile cut lists issued from our Meadowdale facility against the approved revision.
Thermal and solar schedule
U-value and SHGC values for the specified assemblies, tabled against the climatic zone the project falls in.
Installation and fixing schedule
Anchor type, centres, sealant and drainage details per elevation, so the rated system is not compromised on site.
