Mirrors in gyms, dance studios, schools and shopping malls fall under the public and hazard area rule in SANS 10400-N. The mirror must be foil-backed safety mirror or mechanically secured safety glass, because a person can strike it with force.
Mirror is glass, and glass in a public space is regulated
A mirror wall in a gym is fixed at the exact height where a person's hand, shoulder or an uncontrolled weight can strike it, in a room full of hard surfaces and moving bodies. SANS 10400-N requires the glazing in public and hazard areas to be foil-backed safety mirror or mechanically secured safety glass, so that an impact releases the smallest possible hazard rather than a full-height sheet of glass.
Specification by environment
| Environment | Specification | Fixing |
|---|---|---|
| Gym and fitness studio | 4–6 mm foil-backed safety mirror | Mechanical clips or channels at the head, base and edges |
| Dance studio and rehearsal room | 6 mm foil-backed safety mirror to full height | Continuous base channel plus intermediate restraints |
| School hall and gymnasium | 6 mm foil-backed safety mirror or mechanically secured safety glass | Restraints that do not rely on adhesive alone |
| Shopping mall and change room | 4–6 mm mirror with a safety backing | Concealed mechanical fixings, sealed edges |
| Home gym | 4 mm foil-backed safety mirror | Adhesive plus mechanical restraint at the base and head |
Adhesive only is the failure we are asked to replace
A full-height mirror wall bonded to plasterboard with construction adhesive held for a year, then let go along one edge. The fix is not a repair: the wall is rebuilt with a backing board, mechanical restraints at the base and head, and foil-backed panels so the mirror cannot release as free glass into a room full of people.
What a compliant mirror wall includes
- 01Foil-backed mirror panels, so a broken pane stays on its backing.
- 02A continuous base channel or restraint that the panels sit into.
- 03Head and intermediate restraints at engineered centres, fixed to structure.
- 04A substrate that carries the load: not plasterboard alone on a stud wall.
- 05Sealed and supported vertical joints, so panels cannot move against each other.
- 06A documented fixing schedule, which matters when a facility is audited.
The commercial argument for doing it properly
A mirror wall is one of the cheapest elements of a facility to specify correctly and one of the most public failures if it is not. For schools and gyms, the difference between adhesive-only and a restrained foil-backed system is a small fraction of the build, and it removes a failure mode that no insurance policy describes well.
